The 2008-09 season was truly a historic season for the Hershey High School Trojans. The Trojans once again captured the coveted Bear’s Cup as champions of the CPIHL . They did so in impressive fashion by finishing the regular season and the Bears’ Cup playoffs without a loss, the first time in the history of the CPIHL that any club has accomplished this feat. Not satisfied with winning their sixth Bears’ Cup in seven years, and 10th overall, the Trojans focused upon the Flyers Cup Eastern State High School Championship. In an unprecedented playoff run and performance, the Trojans advanced to the finals of the Flyers Cup before losing in overtime to the eventual state champions, Bayard Rustin. The 2009 Flyers Cup Finals were the last high school ice hockey games to ever be played in the historic Philadelphia Spectrum.
The 2009-10 squad will face some significant challenges in replacing a very talented and hardworking group that was lost to graduation, including Breakaway! Magazine’s 2008-09 High School Player of the Year, Tyler Lewis; 2009 Flyers Cup Most Outstanding Goalie, Jonathan Lang; CPIHL All-Star, Brian Scannell; and teammates , Peter Greensmith and Michael Reese. The good news is that the Trojans return a strong nucleus for the upcoming season led by senior defensemen, Justin Smith and Ryan Tezak, and senior forwards, Scott Lang and Todd Warden. Tezak, Lang and Warden were selected to the CPIHL All-Star Team this past season. Tezak was also named to the 2009 Flyers Cup All-Tournament team and the 2008-09 4th team All-Breakaway! Magazine squad. Also returning are a skilled group of juniors that includes: forwards, Pat Darling, Noah Hamilla, Brooks Lewis, Evan Ney, and Jordan Shuey. Experienced juniors, Alex Eby and Shane Winters will help anchor the blue line corps, which yielded a mere 18 goals in 16 regular season games in 2008-09. Sophomore forwards, Jonnie Nolan and Nick Uberroth, and new comers to the varsity squad, defensemen, Adam Kiscadden and Guy Lewis will add depth to the team. Junior Colin Sinclair, who shared goaltending duties and posted a spectacular 1.00 goals against average and .925 save percentage last year, will return in net. He will be supported by sophomore goalie, Gage Cvijic.
Due to the retirement of NHL and AHL veteran and long time youth and high school hockey coach, Dave Fenvyes, the Trojans welcome new varsity coaches, Tom Malloy and Pat McKenna. They join seasoned coaching veterans, Craig Rank and Dave Parro. Sue Tezak will return as team manager.
In its commitment to continue the tradition of excellence in high school ice hockey, Hershey takes great pride in the efforts of JV head coach, Greg Lelek, and his newly appointed assistant, Shaun Kroeck, as they develop the next group of Trojan ice hockey players. The future of the club remains strong as evident by the need to field two teams for 2009-10 at the middle school level. The young Trojans will be led by head coaches, Mark Freer and Brad Kisscaden, and their assistant coaches, Roland Hilgers and George Blackall.
All of the Hershey squads look forward to a successful season and to continue the tradition of excellence of Hershey Hockey! |
